Mom issues warning after 10-year-old son collapses after playing in the ocean

There’s no better way to escape the sky-high temperatures than a day at the beach, but even though the shore can provide some relief, one Massachusetts mother learned it also comes with its own set of unique dangers.

And now she wants to warn others.

Even though the scare happened more than a week ago, Heather Cassini said she’s still “shaking.”

Cassini, 40, was visiting Hampton Beach in New Hampshire on July 4 with her family when all of a sudden her 10-year-old son Declan said he didn’t feel good.

At first Cassini wasn’t concerned. It was hot, and Declan had been playing in the ocean.

“I thought the breakfast was just too much for the waves and he just needed to lay down,” Cassini wrote on a now viral Facebook post. As soon as they started to head back so Declan could lay down, he became “disoriented” and collapsed on a sunbather.

Although he was able to stand back up, but once again stumbled to the ground.

“I’m pregnant and frantically trying to pick him up,” Cassini told Today.com. “He’s going in and out of consciousness and vomiting. And he was so pale.”

Today was one of the scariest days of my life. Let this be a PSA to parents out there.

We took the kids on a fun overnight to Hampton Beach last night. Declan got a good night sleep, woke up had a good breakfast from the hotel buffet and we hydrated preparing for a day at the beach.

We got to the beach it was high 70s low 80s. Set up our spot for the day and headed to the water. Gus played in the sand running from the water. Declan was in the water playing. I was watching them because of the waves and well it’s a body of water. I was scanning for dangers in the water or their safety.

Declan got out a few times to see Tripp and get some water. The third time we went down to the water Declan got out after a few minutes and sat down. He said I don’t feel good I think I’m going to throw up.

So I grabbed Gus and said ok let’s go back to dad you can lay down. I thought the breakfast was too much for the waves and he just needed to lay down.

As we make our way to 100 or so feet to John Declan starts to become disoriented and falls onto a lady sun bathing. I thought he tripped but as he got up he said mom I don’t feel good. (Now i know from him telling me. Everything went white for him and he couldnt see) We are now in front of a group of ladies and I can see John. I’m yelling I need help as I’m carrying Declan. Declan passes out onto the beach and starts throwing up all over. The ladies jump up and scream call 911. They are in the medical field and can see he’s in distress.

One lady starts running for the lifeguards, the others are trying to keep him conscious as he’s throwing up and passing out.

The whole team of beach paramedics come over and they are checking vitals, getting him aroused and warm.

He had cold shock from the 52 degree water and he was becoming hypothermic. They warmed him, the nurses got him hydrated and sitting up.

After what felt like eternity he was up and talking. We waited for him to feel better and got him to the car. He had to be escorted to the car by me since he was still lightheaded. He bounced back like only Declan could.

I had no idea this could happen. I’ve been going to the beach my whole life. I’ve never seen or heard this happen. The paramedics said they see it a lot especially with the lifeguards.

Declan is feeling good as new now. We have him home feeding him fuilds and ensuring he feels ok.

Just a warning to those with kids who feel no cold and love the water. Just because they can handle it doesn’t mean they can handle it.
